What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye can occur when your eyes aren’t producing quality tears, or your tears are evaporating too quickly.

Your tear film consists of 3 layers

  • The oily outer layer
  • The watery middle layer
  • The inner mucus layer

When the glands that produce these elements of your tears are not functioning properly or become inflamed, dry eye can occur. Inflammation can also result from meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).

What Is MGD?

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a common condition in which the meibomian glands, which secrete an oily substance that keeps the eye healthy and well-moisturized, become blocked or fail to produce their protective oil. This disruption can lead to uncomfortable symptoms such as dry eyes, redness, and irritation.

We can help treat MGD with OptiLight by Lumenis, iLux technology, and BlephEx.

Diagnosing MGD

If you regularly use drops and have symptoms such as eye dryness and irritation, our team can evaluate your symptoms. Your eyelids will be compressed to assess the level and quality of meibum that is expressed. If healthy, the meibum is clear and adequate—the more severe the blockage, the thicker and cloudier the meibum.

Our Dry Eye Treatments & Solutions

We offer a variety of treatment methods, including OptiLight by Lumenis at our Greensburg location, to help address your dry eye symptoms and get your comfort back.

OptiLight by Lumenis

OptiLight by Lumenis is a light-based, non-invasive treatment done in the area below the eyes to manage dry eye. The first and only IPL FDA-approved for dry eye management.

OptiLight uses precise pulses of light to reduce the inflammation that is typically associated with dry eye disease, improve tear break-up time, and increase meibomian gland functionality.

Learn More About OptiLight

The iLux handheld device is a treatment method that uses an LED-based heat source to gently warm the inner and outer surface of the eyelids to clear blockages in the oil glands of your eyelids. This treatment method addresses dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction.

The iLux process begins with your doctor assessing your treatment zones and using the Smart Tip Patient Interface to gently warm the blocked glands to soften and release the oil. Through compression, the oil is expressed from the glands.

BlephEx is an in-office procedure that treats inflammation of the eyelids. This inflammation can be caused by meibomian gland dysfunction and clogged oil glands, and BlephEx can provide much-needed relief.

BlephEx works by cleaning the accumulated bacterial biofilm and plaque along the edge of your eyelids and eyelashes to help unclog oil glands.
